&quot;This fugitive sheet was in the collection of the medical historian Dr LeRoy Crummer, who dated it to ca. 1525-153. It is based on a Gravida figure, showing the dissection of a owman with a pregnant uterus, in Johannes de Ketham&#039;s Fasciculo de medicina, published in Venice in Italian in 1493 (Roberts and Tomlinson 1992, p. 42, pl. 8). Although the 1493 plate is radically different in its naturalism from the schematic, squatting Gravida figure which appeared in the first De Ketham edition in Latin in Venice 1491, the information given in the lettering to the plate is essentially the same and is repeated in the lettering on the fugitive sheet&quot;]]></dcterms:description>

The artist shows sutures where the breasts have been removed. Three Bavarian passers-by are open-mouthed with astonishment. The drawing and its pair apparently refer to the war memorial in the Marktplatz at Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria, including a sculpture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria sculpted by Friedrich Lommel in 1923. That figure of Saint Catherine is similar to the present figure of Germania, though there are also many differences. The Lex Heinze (referred to in the lettering for the companion drawing) was a German law passed in 1900 forbidding unseemly or obscene representations in public places. The lettering implies that a Dr Casselmann spoke in favour of the law in the Bavarian parliament (Bayerischer Landtag): Dr. jur. Leopold Casselmann (1858-1930, from 1907 Ritter von Casselmann), mayor of Bayreuth 1900-1918, was minister of justice for Bavaria 1918-1919<br />

&quot;I have seen it necessary for the surgeon, to put the patient to a great deal of pain, by being obliged to cut out the threads with a scalpel. But when the tenaculum is used, every risk of this kind is avoided, from the ligatures generally dropping of their own accord, in the course of the third or fourth dressing of the fore.&quot; (57)<br />
goes on to describe how one might tie arteries and nerves to help reduce pain &quot;for the purpose of effecting this with ease and safety, various kinds of instruments termed a forceps have been invented; with these, the arteries of a fore are laid hold of and pulled out, so as to admit of the application of ligatures&quot; (forceps good for larger blood-vessels but the tenaculum better for smaller arteries - see plate 1; &quot;as a hook of this form answers equally well in the larger arteries likewise, the use of the forceps may therefore be laid entirely aside. The manner of using the tenaculum is this&quot;<br />
