&quot;Opérateur&quot; was defined by F.-S. Régnier-Desmarais (1632-1713) as follows: &quot;Qui fait certaines opérations de chirurgie. Opérateur oculiste. Opérateur pour les dents. Opérateur pour la pierre. Fameux opérateur. Il se prend plus particulièrement pour un charlatan, qui debite ses remèdes, &amp; qui vend ses drogues en place publique&quot; (Nouveau dictionnaire de l&#039;Académie Françoise, Paris 1718, vol. 2 p. 168). Pierre Richelet (1626-1698) defined it as follows: &quot;Opérateur (Empyricus). Sorte de médecin chimique, qui ordinairement vend, ou fait vendre du baume &amp; d&#039;autres sortes de drogues sur un théatre dans les places publiques des villes (Un bon Opérateur)&quot; (Dictionnaire de la langue françoise, ancienne et moderne, Lyon 1759, vol. 2, p. 757).
